28th International Passive House Conference | 24 and 25 April 2026, Haus der Technik in Essen, Germany
The 28th International Passive House Conference was a great success! The dynamic forum again connected people who genuinely care about better buildings and a better future.
The four conference days were packed with interactive workshops, informative talks, countless conversations, and impressive building tours that offered valuable input for everyone. What really stood out was the sense of shared purpose and motivation to take action across the whole community.
We also seized the opportunity to pop the corks: Together we reflected on everything that has happened since the founding of the Passive House Institute 30 years ago. The participants also shared their own experiences and memories of their involvement in the energy efficiency movement. Last but not least, we celebrated the 35th birthday of the world's first Passive House in Darmstadt!
Special interview with Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Feist (founder of the Passive House Institute) on the occasion of these anniversaries:
What made the conference especially engaging was the range of topics. As one of the conference speakers, Fernando Rubio Ezquieta from WW+P Architects, shared, one moment you’d be hearing about global economic shifts needed to tackle climate change, and the next you’d be deep into the specifics of ventilation systems or industrial doors. That mix of big-picture thinking and technical detail is exactly what makes this field so interesting and so impactful.
Beyond the presentations, the real magic was in the people. Participant Vasilis Giannopoulos from Internorm UK summed it up well: it was a chance to exchange ideas, learn from real projects, and have meaningful discussions about how different markets are evolving. But just as important was the chance to connect in person, seeing familiar faces and meeting collaborators face-to-face after years of working together remotely.
There were also some powerful conversations about the bigger context. iPHA Affiliate Ken Levenson from the Passive House Network highlighted sessions that connected building performance to topics such as resource use, social responsibility, and energy independence, reminding everyone that what we do in buildings ties directly to much larger global challenges.
One theme that kept coming up was the importance of retrofitting existing buildings. Laszlo Lepp, from the Passive House Institute Innsbruck and iPHA Affiliate Passivhaus Austria, put it into perspective: while new builds often get the spotlight, the real transformation lies in what we already have. EnerPHit retrofits, with their step-by-step approach and measurable results, are becoming a key part of the solution, even if they come with challenges around complexity and cost. Still, the message was clear: this isn’t a niche topic anymore, it’s central to making real progress.
By the end of the conference, there was a strong sense of momentum and excitement, too. Events like this remind us that our daily work is part of something bigger!
On Sunday, the conference participants had the opportunity to visit highly energy-efficient beacon projects in the area. A big thank you goes to the regional agency NRW.Energy4Climate and to all architectural offices and building users involved in the tours for their commitment and great support before and during the excursions.
This year, participants could choose between four tours focusing on: "Schools / nurseries", "Energy-efficient homes in Essen - Bochum - Dortmund", "Districts in Cologne / Düsseldorf" und "Energy-efficient homes in Cologne".
The next International Passive House Conference will take place at the University of Innsbruck on 2 + 3 April 2027.
