When the "House of Learn­ing" was de­signed an at­tempt was made to keep the eco­lo­gic­al foot­print as small as pos­sible, whereby the cli­ent's so­cio-cul­tur­al and eco­nom­ic as­pects play an equally role. There were many small meas­ures and un­con­ven­tion­al ap­proaches ne­ces­sary to pur­sue these goals.

Agar Grove block is the largest scale Passivhaus de­vel­op­ment in the UK. It drove in­nov­at­ive ways of deal­ing with a ma­sonry con­struc­tion typ­ic­al of the UK at scale. A grow­ing aware­ness of em­bod­ied car­bon led to re­search on the next phase com­par­ing the con­struc­tion and tender ma­ter­i­al car­bon im­pacts.

Cli­ma­te-spe­cif­ic re­new­ab­le pri­ma­ry en­er­gy fac­tors across Chi­na

This pa­per de­scribes the PER (primary en­ergy re­new­able) ap­proach based on se­lec­ted ex­amples from dif­fer­ent cli­mate zones in China. It ex­plains how and why PER weight­ing factors vary for dif­fer­ent loc­a­tions and high­lights the im­plic­a­tions for com­bin­ing en­ergy ef­fi­ciency and re­new­able en­ergy sup­ply.

The paradigm shift from fossil fuel based build­ing ser­vices tech­no­logy to a re­new­able en­ergy sup­ply makes pos­sible new de­cent­ral tech­niques with a very fa­vour­able life cycle as­sess­ment. In the next few years the op­por­tun­ity must be seized to bring sus­tain­able tech­no­logy onto the mar­ket on an in­dus­tri­al scale.
